Ingredients
- APPLE FILLING
- 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- CRUST
- 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups shortening
- 2 eggs yolks plus water to equal 1 cup, reserve 1 egg white
- ICING/FROSTING
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk or light cream (approximately)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
How To Make my grandma’s apple strudel
Step 1Mix apple slices, sugar, 1/2 cup flour and 1 tsp cinnamon for the filling. Set aside.
Step 2Mix the remaining ingredients for pie crust, reserving 1 egg white.
Step 3Divide dough in two pieces.
Step 4Roll out 1/2 of the dough to fit a 10×15 inch jelly roll pan with sides.
Step 5Cover with apple mixture.
Step 6Roll out top crust. Cover with top crust.
Step 7Brush top with egg white.
Step 8Slit crust.
Step 9Bake at 350 for 45-60 min.
Step 10For the icing, mix 1 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla with enough cream or milk to make a thin frosting.
Step 11Mix well and spread over hot crust.
