🍴 Ingredients
- The Foundation:
- 1 ½ lbs Ground beef (80/20)
- 1 Small yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- The “Glue”:
- 1 can (10.5 oz) Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Celery soup
- ½ cup Sour cream (for tang and creaminess)
- 1 ½ cups Frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- The “Lace” & Crown:
- 2 cups Sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 bag (32 oz) Frozen Tater Tots (Do not thaw!)
- Salt & heavy Black Pepper
👩🍳 Instructions
1. The Beef Render
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the onion. Drain the excess grease.
- Stir in the garlic, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 more minute until the garlic is fragrant.
2. The Creamy Base
- In the same skillet (or a separate bowl), combine the beef mixture with the canned soup, sour cream, and frozen vegetables.
- Spread this mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
3. The Cheese Barrier
- Sprinkle 1 ½ cups of the cheese directly over the meat mixture. This acts as a “seal,” preventing the steam from the meat from making the tater tots soggy from underneath.
4. The “Soldier” Alignment
- Arrange the frozen tater tots in neat, tight rows over the cheese.
- The Pro Move: Don’t just dump them; lining them up ensures even airflow and maximum crispiness.
5. The Golden Finish
- Bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of cheese over the tots, and bake for another 5–10 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and the tots are a deep, golden brown.
The “Crispy-Edge” Hack: If you like your tater tots extra crunchy, give the top a light spray of non-stick olive oil or butter spray before they go into the oven. It accelerates the browning process and gives them a “fast-food” style crunch.
