🍴 Ingredients
- The “Blanket” (Base):
- 8–10 slices White sandwich bread (the softer the better)
- 4 oz Cream cheese (softened)
- 2 tbsp Powdered sugar (to sweeten the cream cheese)
- The “Custard” Dip:
- 2 Large eggs
- 3 tbsp Whole milk
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- The “Churro” Finish:
- ½ cup Granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp Ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp Butter (for the skillet)
👩🍳 Instructions
1. The Bread Compression
- Trim the crusts off each slice of bread.
- Use a rolling pin (or a smooth glass) to flatten the bread until it is about half its original thickness. This prevents the bread from absorbing too much egg and becoming “soggy-heavy.”
2. The Creamy Core
- In a small bowl, whisk the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar.
- Spread about 1 tablespoon of the mixture along the bottom edge of each bread slice.
- Roll the bread up tightly like a cigar. The Pro Move: Lightly dab the top edge with a drop of water to help it stick.
3. The Custard Whisk
- In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and vanilla.
- In a separate shallow bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
4. The Sizzle & Seal
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Quickly dip each roll into the egg custard, turning to coat all sides. Do not soak them—a 2-second dunk is all you need.
- Place the rolls in the skillet, seam-side down first. This “cauterizes” the seal so they stay closed.
5. The “Churro” Roll
- Fry for 1–2 minutes per side until they are deep golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Immediately remove the hot rolls from the pan and toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mix. The heat from the butter will cause the sugar to “grab” onto the bread, creating a glittering, crunchy crust.
The “Berry” Upgrade: Before rolling, add three small slices of fresh strawberry or a teaspoon of Nutella on top of the cream cheese. When heated, the fruit softens into a jam-like consistency that flows out of the center when bitten.
